Badaga woman ‘RISES’ to take Central schemes to rural Nilgiris

Dr. Uma Mallan, a Badaga woman hailing from Pudhuhatti village here, who serves as the director of physical education at a pri-vate college in Chennai, has started a social service net-work titled “Rural Initiative through Social Service and Empowerment” (RISE) to reach out to the villagers and tribes in the Nilgiris, The initiative will help the villagers and tribes people get access to the central welfare schemes to improve their lives, besides looking for avenues to create jobs and find a solution to the tea price issue.

Addressing a press conference, Ms Uma, who is also a social and sports activist, said she has opened an office for this initiative here that will work with staffers to assist people, especially women, in applying for PM Ayushman Bharat scheme, free cooking gas to women, free housing scheme to low income group, PM’s Scholarship Scheme(PMSS), Post-matric

scholarship scheme for SC students (PMS-SC), PM Bhima Fasal Nidhi Yojana (PMFBY), PM Kisan Samman Yojana (PMKSN), PM Street Vendor Atma Nirbhar(PM-SVAN), PM Sharm yogi maan dhan yojana(PM-SYM) to name a few. “Many of the Union government’s welfare schemes went unno-ticed all these years because of lack of publicity and ini-tiative by the local official-dom,” she noted.

Ms Uma, who coined the adage “Fit India, My India, “which was appreciat-ed by the Union govern-ment, added that her aim is to promote the welfare schemes of the Union gov-ernment among the resi dents of Nilgiris for the ben-efit of people from all walks of life.
